Unjust Mercy: How One Forsakes their own Mercy

In how to obtain mercy, we found out that confession of sins qualifies one to receive mercy. In confessing, you acknowledge to the witness of the Holy Spirit that what you did was wrong. Christ then takes you out of sin and takes sin out of you. Sin makes one a candidate for judgement. However, God always shows mercy before executing judgement. God is just in showing mercy and merciful in executing justice.

Commonly called unsanctified mercy, Unjust Mercy is expecting God to show mercy where it will be unjust. Showing mercy that goes against justice is ungodly. Imagining showing mercy to a rapist who clearly hasn’t repented of his ways; it is unjust to the many he will cause harm to. In Psalm 10:3, the Word says “the wicked blesses the greedy”. That is unjust Mercy. It’s the kind of mercy that doesn’t lead to repentance. It rather leads to more perpetuation of evil. Let’s start from the top!

Merciful to All

The calvanistic idea that some people are predestined to be the elect of God is such a religious idea. It is even against the power of choice God gave to man. Why would Jesus pay such a hefty price and then bar the “non-elect” who genuinely come to Him? That doesn’t make sense and is against many core verses in Scripture. Every religion thinks they are the elect and all others are false. Christianity is the only way that respects your choice, giving whosoever the opportunity to come into the Light. Most importantly, we don’t sentence anyone to death or even disown them if they want to leave the faith, something all other religions and cults never offer. We simply keep them in our prayers.

There are sure mercies for everyone alive. If you have never been saved before and do not know the Gospel, it doesn’t matter how many years you served satan and committed evil. If you surrender to Jesus, He will accept you with open arms. This is mercy. Underserved but never unjust. The salvation in Christ rids you of eternal condemnation, a punishment far bigger than the natural consequences of your actions. This salvation is available to everyone. Whether you were the devil’s right hand man or his favourite girlfriend, it doesn’t matter. This is the Gospel – such Good News – the ministry of reconciliation given to all saints to tell the rest of the world.

God showed mercy to Old Testament Jezebel and New Testament Jezebels. He showed mercy to Pharoah but Pharoah forsook his own Mercy. Who hasn’t God shown mercy to? God is just in showing mercy. You can obtain mercy; mercy can be multipled unto you, yes. That notwithstanding, God shows mercy to everyone because it is His nature, and the very idea of mercy is that it is shown to those who don’t deserve it. Everyone was given a time to repent. If they don’t, they forsook their own mercy, not that God didn’t show them mercy. He always does.

Slow to Anger

Exodus 34:6
And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

Numbers 14:18
‘The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’

Nehemiah 9:17
They refused to obey, and they were not mindful of Your wonders That You did among them. But they hardened their necks, And in their rebellion They appointed a leader To return to their bondage. But You are God, Ready to pardon, Gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, Abundant in kindness, And did not forsake them.

Psalms 86:15
But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

Psalms 145:8-9
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.

Joel 2:13 NKJV
So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.

Jonah 4:2 NKJV
So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.

Nahum 1:3 NKJV
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord has His way In the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust of His feet.

So have you clearly seen that Grace did not start in the New Testament? God has always been gracious. We have this weird notion that God was always quick to judge in the Old Testament but it’s clearly not an accurate way of looking at it. That mindset can lead one to abuse grace because it makes us think judgement is no longer available in the New Testament. Judgement is not the opposite of Mercy; it is the complement of it. God has to be both merciful and just to forgive you. That’s what 1 John 1:9 says. God never pours out judgement without first showing Mercy. Before He pours out judgement, He warns severally.

This is the forbearance of God. Romans 3:25 says He even forbears with the many sins of unbelievers before they actually encounter the Gospel. He is long-suffering. He is slow to anger. He showed mercy to literally everyone. When we discuss Justice, we will talk about the wrath of the Lamb, the reciprocity of God and how a loving Father is also a Righteous Judge. We will talk a bit about the justice in the kingdom of darkness because after enjoying the pleasures of sin, sin would also want to benefit from you. So you’ll find a lot of people in sexual sins enjoying themselves at the beginning. When they finally want to stop, they realize they are stuck in the addiction they don’t enjoy anymore.

How to Forsake Your Own Mercy

If God shows mercy to all, and God is slow to anger, how come He condemns others still in judgement? They forsook God’s mercy. They rejected the warnings, scoffed at His messengers, lived double lives and obeyed their sinful lusts although God clearly showed them mercy. 2 Chronicles 36:16 says “they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy.”

Beware of doctrines of demons who lie to you that the door will always been open. God will never show unjust Mercy. You can’t enjoy sin and still make it to Heaven. You’re not the first person to “discover” the loophole that you can sin as often as you want and repent later. All who discovered it ended up in hell. You cannot intentionally abuse grace and get away with it. There’s a way that seems right to man but in the end, it leads to death. One day, you’ll fraternize with evil and not see the need to come back into the light. Sin has degenerative power and will corrode how you see yourself and how you see God.

Indeed, there is no remedy and no sacrifice left if you wilfully reject Jesus. Don’t insult the spirit of grace. Hebrews 10:26-29 says “if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?”

Pharoah was shown mercy. 9 different times, God through Moses warned Pharoah about the coming judgement. After every single judgement came, he would repent and ask Moses to pray for God to stop the judgement. The merciful God answered all those prayers. Immediately there was no judgement, he would harden his heart and disobey God’s instructions to let God’s people go. When his long rope of mercy was done, there was no room for repentance.

This is the pattern throughout all Scriptures; God shows mercy before judgement. He forewarns by declaring judgement. But between the verdict and the execution of the judgement, He gives a final call to repentance. This is literally in every book of the Bible. The truth is that, nobody can tell how long God will forbear with a man. Just as God reserves the right to predetermine people’s destinies, He also reserves the right to decide how long He will wait for the prodigal son. Nonetheless, just like in the case of the 5 foolish virgins, a time really comes when the door is closed and there is no remedy.

My advice? Fear God. It is a dangerous thing to fall into the hands of the Living God. Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. Learn from the people who have gone before you, lest you follow the way of Balaam. Stay away from polluted fountains; you may be listening to men of God who have made themselves gods of men, already on the path to destruction. “If people escape the moral filth of this world through the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, then get tangled up in it again and are overcome by it, they are worse off than they were before. It would be better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, having come to know it, to turn back from the holy commandment entrusted to them.”
